17th Annual Molokai Master Blasters Canoe Race
held on Saturday, November 9, 2002 from Kawela to the Molokai Canoe Shack at the Kaunakakai small boat harbor. The Imua69 Ohana Women's Crew looked fantastic and did a great job!

Team Imua69 Ohana:
Nani, Carol McLean, Vivian Griffin, Kelly, Darrylnn, Yvonne Keahi (Nani's Sister)

...in "uniform" -Ready to go. Check out the class symbol, the "He'e", sewn atop the caps.

The women looked fantastic and did a great job! They received the following honors:
* Second Place over-all, of 10 entries.
* Second Place, in most Creative Costume.
despite being determined to be the "oldest" women's crew by way of added age accumulation!

The idea of entering this competition started at the Hilo Big 5-0 where the little nucleus of Imua69 Women's Canoe Paddlers talked about entering the Master Blasters Competition which Gail participated in the past two years. After the idea was put into action, the schedules conflicted with Pua and Gail so the girls picked up some "ohana" including Haunani's sister Yvonne, KS Class of '64, Kelly Sylva (Richard Soo's Companion) and friends Carol McLean and Vivian Griffin.

Well, they did a great job! Here are some photos to let you know what happened.

Uncle Herb Hoe prepared the dinner on Friday evening and Breakfast on Saturday morning at his Beach Front Residence. It was so beautiful. The meals were very well prepared and so "ono."

This is how the Master Blasters Canoe Race Works. Canoes are lined up along the beach and each team must consume four cans of beer between the six team members. Only then is the team allowed to run to their canoe, push off, and paddle to the next stop a mile away.

At each stop four more cans must be consumed before paddling to the next stop. In all, 20 cans of beer are consumed by each team by the end the race.

Note: The men drink 6 cans at each stop and put their ama together and strap it to the canoe. It's a fun event started 17 years ago by two members of the Canoe Club as a way to maintain finances for their club.

After the race, the club provided ono lunch with stew, and even pulehu fish. Music was oldies but goodies and then into Reggae. Our crew represented our class very well! Yvonne and Nani were so gracious singing "Karaoke Style" on stage for us.
