The End of Year event hosted through Mugs’ generosity, began Saturday afternoon with people lazily showing up, walking on the beach, playing electronic darts, decorating the yard, lining up our dishes and simply talking story! Several of the band were out battling the Luana Hills golf course! We had Joe Kaulukukui, Tuddie and the Hiranakas visiting from out of town (making accurate the Kimo Spencer adage, “so it was too far to drive from where?”). We gathered in our tradition for blessing of the food and our gathering, remembering to ask for healing with our classmates and family who continue to face challenges (Debbie Kaopuiki Ono wandered in bravely, albeit a little shakily on her feet, dressed merrily for the season). Looking at the pictures, you observe the joy of the season! Each of our classmates had tales to tell and we spoke of all the rest who hadn’t made it for one reason or another. Many were simply MIA (missing in action) and we continue to wonder what they were doing that could be more fun that celebrating for an hour or two with us. People came and went through the evening and each time, there were the traditional reception lines and hugs and kisses. We had enough food to feed about 60 more people: every dish including fishes, noodles, chicken, beef, poi, lomi salmon, chips, and every imaginable libation including waters and juices!!

During different times we called classmates away like Warren (who we interrupted at 11:45pm Connecticut time! Sorry!), Theone and Sam, Donnette, Roy, and others. Andy called from the Big Island, in the company of David, Melissa, and Nate.

What a grand evening! Happy New Year to all! We discussed Kauai, the upcoming Kapalama Cup (Golf Challenge between ’69, ’70 and ’71), and next year’s 35th Reunion at the Schools!! Time passes rapidly and appears accelerating. We even anticipate that our numbers will shrink as the years continue; life simply waits for no one. We need to renew those precious relationships with families and friends while we can! Perhaps that is a small, enjoyable part of our getting together as classmates. Mahalo to everyone and especially Mugs for making the gathering possible!
