What do Olympic Gold Medalist, speed skater, Apolo Anton Ohno and 70's teen idol, Bobby Sherman have in common? Answer: An original poem, penned by Los Angeles high fashion hair stylist, Jan Kayatani, honoring each letter of their names. But unlike Sherman, who had to settle for reading his poem in a 1971 issue of Tiger Beat, a teen magazine, Ohno, the 20 year old Gold Medalist, was on hand at a Chicago restaurant to personally receive his poem, "Apolo Anton Ohno." Kayatani was able to deliver her lyrics after she and life partner, Kimo Spencer, a Los Angeles-based international business and marketing magnate, were the highest bidders on an Ebay Auction for a private dinner with the Olympic Gold Medalist.
On June 15, 2002, Kayatani and Spencer celebrated their winning bid with Ohno and his father, Yuki Ohno at Gibson's, one of Chicago's finest restaurants, after a day at SportsFest, an event honoring the country's sports stars and celebrities. AJ, an eleven-year-old Pennsylvanian boy, Judy, his mother, and Becky, a sports agent, whose Mounted Memories agency represents Ohno, joined the foursome. During the evening, Kayatani and Spencer discovered other similarities with Ohno and Yuki, also a high fashion hair stylist, who owns Yuki's Diffusions' salon in downtown Seattle. While Kayatani and Yuki talked "shop" over the latest styles in hair shaping and blow drying, Ohno was surprised to learn that Spencer, a rap music enthusiast who could easily pass for Ohno's brother, also shares Ohno's passion for rap music by artists, DJ Quik and Ludacriss.

The highlight of the evening, according to Kayatani was "when I gave Apolo his poem." She added, "After I saw how he won his Olympic Gold medal in the 5000 meter speed skating race, (basically by default, when a South Korean skater was disqualified), and how he handled himself with both pride and humility (after complaints by the South Korean Olympic team), Apolo became a true hero and I knew I had to honor him." "Further," added Kayatani, "he's so cute." To complement Kayatani's poem, Spencer and Kayatani presented Ohno with a Hawaiian koa bracelet and a koa box, created by Spencer's high school classmate, Curtis Wilmington. Wilmington owns Hawaiian Accessories, one of Hawaii's most established and highly successful koa jewelry boutiques. Ohno acknowledged the poem, koa bracelet and koa box with his winning smile and, according to Kayatani and Spencer, was most appreciative and genuinely liked his gifts.

During dinner, Kayatani and Spencer found Ohno to be unfazed by his new fame and fortune or good looks. Instead, Ohno, played the perfect host by tending to his guests. Ohno made sure everyone, especially his dad, felt comfortable. Kayatani and Spencer sensed Ohno's special and close relationship to his father, who has single-handedly raised Ohno from infancy and has kept his son's values grounded in love, honor and respect. These values carried over and captured Kayatani's attention, when Ohno graciously asked how she liked her dinner. Kayatani, spell-bound had "no words." Ohno was also a good sport when Spencer, whose humor and wit are just as sharp as the blades on Ohno's ice skates, displayed his Apolo look-alike photos. The photos showed Spencer, dubbed "Kulolo Won Ton Oh No" dressed in speed-skating garb and sporting an Apolo signature soul patch. Ohno, the gracious host, in turn, asked Spencer for his autograph!
In moments of quiet anticipation, Spencer, who could moonlight as a stand up comedian, provided comic relief for the group. When their waiter recognized Ohno as the Olympic Gold Medalist speed skater, Spencer asked if the waiter recognized Spencer. Apologetically, the waiter admitted he did not. Not to be outdone, Spencer continued and asked if the waiter knew the kung fu movie star, Jet Li. The waiter acknowledged he did. With that, Spencer jokingly said he was Jet Li's cousin, Ug Li.

For Kayatani and Spencer, dinner with Apolo Anton Ohno was a chance of a lifetime. Who would have imagined that the Los Angeles couple would spend a moonlit evening, energized with good Zen and a mixture of Santa Ana and Lake Michigan winds, in the company of a gracious and humble Olympic Gold Medalist, whose heart is as gold as the medal around his neck! For Ohno, he, too, found Kayatani and Spencer to have hearts of gold. Knowing that the beneficiary of their bid is 13 year old Cody Joe Kirkland, a recent heart transplant from Denver, Colorado, Kayatani and Spencer offered to help raise $10,000 in donations for the Colorado boy, who will need lifetime medical treatment. Just as Ohno won the hearts and souls of millions of Americans by this Olympic feats, Kayatani and Spencer may have become lifetime friends to Ohno and his dad, Yuki with their generosity and won the heart of Cody Joe Kirkland in Colorado. Kayatani and Spencer are true heroes deserving of Olympic Gold Medalists in their own right.
