Day 2 (Daytime)-Friday Aug 10, 2001
Narrative by Simeon Alo...

Friday morning started early. Amazingly, a caravan of vehicles made it to the new Kamehameha campus outside of Hilo, pass Kea'au. Following a long and somewhat winding and puka muddy dirt road behind 18 wheelers and passing an array of heavy construction equipment and amazed workers, we assembled within the new Learning Center with classrooms all around for our class presentation. This was chicken-skin stuff as the air was filled with promise of educating future generations of Hawaiian keiki o ka aina o Kamehameha.

The introductions of all the new Administration were made by Nathan Chang. Ricky Pa unveiled his beautiful creation, the legacy gift on behalf of the Class of 1969. Our Hilo classmates will also plant and landscape the campus on behalf of our class. We sang, 'Hawaii Aloha', and 'Imua Kamehameha', very appropriate, very moving, a blessing from the Class of '69, our way of giving back to our Princess a little of what she has given to us. Mahalo's all around and also to those joining us in spirit.

We continued our day's journey up to the steam vents on the Northeast side of Halemaumau crater within sight of the Volcano House. Mahalo, Hoku, Melissa, and George for sharing your mana'o and songs with us; more chicken-skin sharing. Later, lighter moments of laughter continued to abound in and around the classmate groupings as Pam wanted a closer-look picture over the crater barrier-railings, but was immediately restrained with caring and loving hands for lack of the pre-requisite virginity status. This was also related to Gilbert..hee hee, we was going sacrifice him but shucks, we knew tutu pele was going throw him back.

Back up to the Volcano House for lunch. The golfers got special treatment at the head of the line because of an early tee time, Mahalo Melissa. As we enjoyed the company of our classmates; especially Charlie Soon, who joined us with his old friend Art Taniguchi of Hilo. There were lots of other tours and excursions and activities that followed lunch & we hope classmates will share these special moments with us.

Later, 31 golfers headed to the Volcano golf course and started out on a sunny afternoon. However, only 9 iron-willed golfers finished. Because of the cold wind and rain, 22 sensible golfer stopped playing after nine holes.

Congratulations to Charlie and Art, Merl Ferreira, Walter K., Gilbert C., Linda R., Bill Gilardy, Cynthia Hashimoto-Swain, and Sam T. for perservering and battling the elements and finishing the 18 holes. However, these iron nine made the other 22 feel like sensible "panties" and awarded them at the golf awards ceremonies held on Sat. with, what else-"PANTIES' all around. hee hee....all in fun.

We stayed at the course and waited for the iron nine to finish; had some bailey's hot coffee and chocolate and beers at the Military camp; finally headed back to the Naniloa...
